How to Keep Your Sofa Looking New in Nairobi's Dust and Sun
Simple weekly habits to protect your sofa from dust, sun, spills and wear — plus how to clean velvet, corduroy, fabric and leather-look sofas in Kenya.
A good sofa should last for many years. In Kenya, the three things that age a sofa fastest are dust, strong sunlight and everyday spills. The good news: a few minutes a week keeps it looking new.
Your weekly routine (10 minutes)
- Vacuum the whole sofa with a soft brush attachment — seats, back, arms and the gaps between cushions. Dust works its way into fabric and wears it down like fine sandpaper.
- Plump and turn the cushions. Swap seat cushions around so they wear evenly, and plump back cushions to keep their shape.
- Wipe the legs and any wooden or metal parts with a dry cloth.
Protect it from the sun
Strong Kenyan sunlight fades fabric faster than anything else, especially dark colours and velvet.
- Place the sofa away from the brightest window, or use curtains or blinds during the hottest hours.
- Rotate throw pillows and blankets so one area doesn’t fade more than the rest.
Dealing with spills
- Act fast. Blot — don’t rub — with a clean, dry cloth to lift as much as possible.
- Dab with a cloth dampened with clean water and a drop of mild soap.
- Test first on a hidden spot before using any cleaning product.
- Let it air-dry naturally; don’t use a hair dryer on upholstery.
Care by fabric
Velvet
Brush gently in one direction with a soft clothes brush to lift the pile and remove pressure marks. Avoid soaking velvet with water.
Corduroy
Vacuum along the ribs, not across them, to lift dust from the grooves.
Woven fabric
The easiest to live with — regular vacuuming and prompt spot-cleaning is all it needs.
Leather-look
Wipe with a slightly damp cloth, then dry. Keep it out of direct sun and away from sharp objects.
Children, pets and daily life
- Use a washable throw on the seat the family uses most.
- Keep sharp toys, keys and belts off the cushions.
- Brush pet hair off weekly with a rubber glove or lint roller.
Once or twice a year
Book a professional upholstery clean. It lifts deep dirt that vacuuming can’t reach and makes the colour look fresh again.
