Corduroy: the relaxed, family-friendly choice
Corduroy has raised ribs (called “wales”) that give it texture. That texture is its secret strength: it hides small marks, crumbs and daily wear far better than a flat fabric.
Choose corduroy if:
- You have children or pets.
- The sofa is used every day for TV, meals and naps.
- You like a warm, cosy, slightly retro look.
Keep in mind: dust can settle between the ribs, so a quick vacuum with a brush attachment once a week keeps it fresh.
Velvet: the luxury statement
Velvet has a short, dense pile that catches the light — which is why velvet sofas look so rich in photos.
Choose velvet if:
- You want the sofa to be the star of the room.
- It’s in a sitting room used mostly for visitors or relaxing.
- You love deep jewel colours — emerald, navy, mustard, burgundy.
Keep in mind: velvet shows marks where you sit or brush against it. They aren’t damage — just brush the fabric gently in one direction and they disappear.
What about Nairobi dust and sunshine?
- Mid-tone colours (grey, taupe, olive, camel, navy) hide dust better than pure white or jet black in either fabric.
- Direct sun fades every fabric over time. Use curtains or place the sofa away from the brightest window.
