Bed Sizes in Kenya Explained: 3x6, 4x6, 5x6 and 6x6
What do 3x6, 4x6, 5x6 and 6x6 mean? A simple guide to Kenyan bed and mattress sizes in feet and centimetres, and how to pick the right one for your bedroom.
In Kenya, beds and mattresses are sold by size in feet — 3x6, 4x6, 5x6 and 6x6. The first number is the width, the second is the length. Almost every bed here is 6 feet long; what changes is the width. Here’s what each size really means and how to choose.

These are the sizes of the mattress. The bed frame itself is always a little bigger — especially with a padded, bubble or chester headboard — so check the full frame size on the product page.
How to choose the right size
1. Measure the room
Measure the wall where the headboard will go and the distance to the opposite wall. Then leave about 60 cm of walking space on each side of the bed and at the foot, so you can make the bed and open wardrobes and doors.
As a rough guide:
- A 5x6 bed is comfortable in a room of about 3 × 3 metres.
- A 6x6 bed needs a bit more — ideally a room of 3.5 × 3.5 metres or larger.
2. Think about who sleeps in it
- Sleeping alone? A 4x6 is plenty for most people.
- Sharing? A 5x6 is the standard couple’s bed. If one of you moves a lot, or children join you in the morning, a 6x6 makes a real difference.
3. Match the mattress to the bed
The mattress must match the bed exactly. A 5x6 mattress on a 6x6 frame slides around; a 6x6 mattress won’t fit a 5x6 frame. When you buy a new bed, check your old mattress size before ordering.

Tall people and 6-foot beds
Standard Kenyan beds are about 6 feet long. If you’re tall, choose a bed without a footboard so your feet aren’t blocked, and ask us whether the design can be made slightly longer.
Getting it into the room
Beds are delivered in parts and assembled in the room, so a narrow corridor is rarely a problem. Headboards are the largest single piece — if your stairs are very tight, send us a photo before ordering.
