4, 6 or 8 Seater? How to Choose the Right Dining Table Size
How big should your dining table be? Simple sizes for 4, 6 and 8 seater dining sets in Kenyan homes, round vs rectangular, and space to leave for chairs.
A dining table that’s too big makes a room feel cramped; one that’s too small means someone always eats on the sofa. Here’s how to get it right — with simple numbers you can measure in five minutes.
Rule 1: Leave room to pull out the chairs
The most important measurement isn’t the table — it’s the space around it. Leave about 75–90 cm between the edge of the table and the wall or other furniture. That’s enough to pull out a chair and sit down without squeezing.
So: table length + about 1.5 metres = the minimum room length you need. Do the same for the width.
Rule 2: Allow about 60 cm per person
Each diner needs roughly 60 cm of table edge to eat comfortably. That gives these typical sizes:

Round or rectangular?
Round tables are great for 4 people in smaller rooms and open-plan apartments. There are no corners to bump into and everyone can see each other.
Rectangular tables fit best in longer rooms and are easier for 6 or more people. They also sit neatly against a wall when you need extra space.
How many seats do you really need?
Think about a normal week, not just Christmas:
- Couples and small families: a 4 seater is usually enough.
- Families of 4–5 who host often: a 6 seater is the sweet spot — it’s the most popular size in Kenya.
- Big families and frequent entertaining: an 8 seater, if your room allows.
If you’re between sizes, choose the smaller table and add a bench or two extra chairs for visitors.
